Travertine in the UAE: Vein Cut vs Cross Cut, Finishes and Where to Use Each

Vein cut or cross cut? Beige or silver? Polished or honed? A practical guide to choosing and buying travertine for villas, facades and pools in Dubai and the UAE.

Travertine is one of the most requested natural stones in the UAE. You see it on villa facades in Dubai Hills, around pools in Abu Dhabi and on hotel floors across Sharjah. But when you ask a supplier for a price, the first questions you get back are usually: vein cut or cross cut? Beige or silver? Which finish? This guide answers those questions in plain language, so you can order the right travertine for your project the first time.

If you are new to the stone itself, start with our introduction: What is travertine? This article is the practical buying guide that comes after it.

Vein cut vs cross cut travertine: what is the difference?

Travertine forms in layers, a bit like the pages of a book. The same block of stone looks completely different depending on which way it is cut:

  • Vein cut slices across the layers, so you see them as long, parallel bands running along the slab. The look is linear, modern and directional. It works well in long corridors, on facades and anywhere you want to lead the eye.
  • Cross cut (sometimes called fleuri cut) slices along the layers, so the pattern becomes soft and cloudy with no strong direction. It feels calm and classic, and it is more forgiving on large floors because joints and small colour changes are less visible.
  • Romano vein cut is a vein cut with tighter, finer bands. We stock it in silver travertine for projects that want a crisp, contemporary stripe.

Neither cut is “better”. It is a design choice. A useful rule: vein cut for walls and facades where you want movement, cross cut for big floors where you want calm. Many villas use both — vein cut on the elevation, cross cut on the terrace and interior floors.

Beige or silver travertine?

The two travertines we keep in stock at our Sharjah warehouse both come from Iran, one of the best-known travertine sources in the world:

  • Beige (Classico) travertine is warm and cream-coloured. It suits Mediterranean, Arabic and classic villa styles, and it pairs well with wood, brass and warm lighting.
  • Silver travertine has bands of silver, grey and soft white. It is the cooler, more modern option for contemporary villas, offices and hotels, and it works well with black metal, glass and concrete.

Both are available in vein cut and cross cut; silver also comes in Romano vein cut. Because travertine is a natural stone, colour varies from one quarry lot to the next, so always look at photos or the real slabs of the lot you will receive — not a catalogue image.

Which finish should you choose?

The finish changes both the look and how the stone performs, especially outdoors in the UAE climate.

FinishLookBest for
PolishedGlossy, deepest colour, reflects lightInterior floors, feature walls, lobbies
HonedSmooth and matt, softer colourInterior floors, bathrooms, covered terraces
BrushedLightly textured, natural feelPool surrounds, terraces, outdoor paths
FilledNatural holes filled with resin or cementMost floors and walls; easier to clean
UnfilledOpen holes, rustic lookFeature walls and facades where texture is wanted

For anything outdoors — pools, terraces, driveways — choose a honed or brushed surface rather than polished. A polished surface becomes slippery when wet and shows wear quickly under sand and foot traffic. Light-coloured travertine is also a popular choice around pools in the Gulf because it stays more comfortable underfoot in the sun than dark stone.

Where to use travertine — and where to be careful

  • Floors: villas, lobbies, corridors and malls. Cross cut hides joints best on large areas.
  • Facades and elevations: a classic UAE use. Facades are normally clad with thicker stone fixed mechanically; follow your facade consultant’s specification for thickness and anchors.
  • Pools and terraces: honed or brushed finish, sealed.
  • Bathrooms and feature walls: filled and sealed travertine works well.
  • Kitchen countertops: possible, but think twice. Travertine is a calcium-based stone, so lemon juice, vinegar and some cleaners can leave dull marks (etching). If you want a stone worktop that is easier to live with, look at quartzite — see our guide Quartz or quartzite?

How much travertine should you order?

Measure the net area in square metres, then add an allowance for cutting and breakage — typically 10–15%, and more for rooms with many corners, diagonal layouts or book-matched walls. Order the whole quantity in one go so that all of it comes from the same lot. Adding a few square metres later from a different lot is the most common reason for visible colour differences on finished floors.

Our slabs are 2 cm and 3 cm thick. As a general guide, 2 cm is common for interior floors and walls, while 3 cm is preferred where the stone needs more strength, such as pool coping, steps and exterior work.

Looking after travertine in the UAE

  • Seal the stone after installation with a good-quality impregnating sealer, and re-seal from time to time — outdoor and pool areas need it more often.
  • Clean with pH-neutral stone cleaner. Avoid acidic and bleach-based products.
  • Sweep sand regularly; in the UAE, fine sand is what wears floor finishes fastest.
  • Around pools, rinse off chlorinated or salt water so it does not dry on the surface.

Buying travertine from a supplier in the UAE: a quick checklist

  1. Is it in stock locally? Stone that is already in the UAE can reach your site in days; imported-to-order stone can take weeks.
  2. Can you see the actual lot? Ask for photos or videos of the slabs you will receive, or visit the warehouse.
  3. Is the quote clear? It should state the stone, cut, finish, thickness, quantity, delivery and whether VAT is included.
  4. Is all the quantity from one lot? Confirm it in writing for large floors and facades.

Frequently asked questions

Is travertine good for outdoor use in Dubai?

Yes. Travertine has been used outdoors in hot climates for centuries. Choose a honed or brushed finish for non-slip surfaces, use thicker stone for exterior work, and seal it.

Which is more modern, vein cut or cross cut?

Vein cut, especially in silver travertine, usually reads as more modern because of its straight lines. Cross cut has a softer, more classic look.

Can I mix vein cut and cross cut in one project?

Yes, and it often looks great — for example vein cut on walls and facades with cross cut on floors. Keep the same colour family so the two cuts belong together.

How do I get a travertine price?

Stone prices move with the market, so we quote each project. Send us the stone, cut, finish, thickness and area in square metres through our quote form or on WhatsApp at +971 58 679 0911.
